An Efficient Method for Eliminating Varying Predicates from a Circumscription
نویسندگان
چکیده
Circumscription appears to be the most powerful and well-studied technique used in formalizing common-sense reasoning. The general form of predicate circumscrip-tion allows for xed and varying ((oating) predicates. We show that the inference problem under this form of circumscription is eeciently reducible to inferencing under circumscription without varying predicates. In fact, we transform this problem even into circumscription without xed and varying predicates, that is where all predicates are minimized. Thus any theorem prover or algorithm for inferencing under circum-scription without xed and varying predicates is able to handle inferencing under the general form of predicate circumscription. As a consequence, algorithms that compute circumscription for an inference task can be simpliied.

Eliminating the Fixed Predicates from a Circumscription
Parallel predicate circumscription is the primary circumscriptive technique used in formalizing commonsense reasoning. In this paper we present a direct syntactic construction for transforming any parallel predicate circumscription using fixed predicates into an equivalent one which does not. Thus, we show that predicate circumscription is no iiiore expressive with fixed predicates than without...
متن کاملEmbedding Circumscriptive Theories in General Disjunctive Programs
This paper presents a method of embedding circumscriptive theories in general disjunctive programs. In a general disjunctive program, negation as failure occurs not only in the body but in the head of a rule. In this setting, minimized predicates of a circumscriptive theory are speci ed using the negation in the body, while xed and varying predicates are expressed by the negation in the head. M...
متن کاملComputing Circumscriptive Databases by Integer Programming: Revisited
In this paper, we consider a method of computing minimal models in circumscription using integer programming in propositional logic and first-order logic with domain closure axioms and unique name axioms. This kind of treatment is very important since this enable to apply various technique developed in operations research to nonmonotonic reasoning. (Nerode et al., 1995) are the first to propose...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Circumscription in DLs
As fragments of first-order logic, Description logics (DLs) do not provide nonmonotonic features such as defeasible inheritance and default rules. Since many applications would benefit from the availability of such features, several families of nonmonotonic DLs have been developed that are mostly based on default logic and autoepistemic logic. In this paper, we consider circumscription as an in...
